about

In the late 80s and early 90s, Chicago artists were on the forefront of the remarkably diverse posthardcore subgenres that were splintering off as musicians embraced new sounds and influences. These bands ranged from the noise rock of Big Black, to Joan of Arc’s early form of emo, to rule-bending math rock from the likes of Shellac and U.S. Maple. It’s unsurprising that a younger generation of midwest artists raised on the local canon would meld these disparate influences back together. My Dad does just that, moving fluidly between sounds beautiful and brutal, simple and complex.

The band is the brainchild of guitarist and vocalist Dave Collis, who was up until now the sole writer and performer on recordings. For live shows, the lineup was initially composed of a rotating cast of additional musicians, though it’s recently settled into a regular formation with bassist Aaron Sheehan and drummers Nnamdi Ogbonnaya, Brendan Smyth, and Brennan Zwieg.

You read that right -- underpinning it all are massive interlocking polyrhythms performed by the band’s three drummers. Is it excessive? Maybe maximalist is a better way to put it. Either way, it’s definitely an experience to hear it.
